    • Bike to the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr.

If you want to uncover the true story of Atlanta’s civil rights history, this is the bike tour that takes you deep into the heart of the struggles, sites, and legacy of Atlanta’s African American community, with a focus on the famous leader who called this city his home – Dr Martin Luther King Jr. As you cycle, a guide will share insightful details of the Civil War, the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras, the rise of African American leaders who paved the way for the modern Civil Rights Movement, and the continual pursuit of social justice for every citizen in Atlanta.

The bike tour begins in Reynoldstown, one of the first African American neighborhoods in Atlanta, settled by freed slaves who were attracted by opportunities of employment on the Atlanta BeltLine railroad.

You’ll cycle to the birthplace and burial site of the monumentally influential leader of the Civil Rights movement – Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Prepare to be moved by tales of King’s childhood in the Sweet Auburn community, and of his father’s rousing sermons delivered in Ebenezer Baptist Church, which rises up from the street in a striking geometric form. The church, founded in 1886, was the spiritual heart for many citizens of the Sweet Auburn community, and was served by the Rev Martin Luther King Sr as pastor in 1931.

You’ll cycle through all the stories of this history-steeped neighborhood, also home to the Business District and Edgewood Avenue, famous for its street murals and artisan food market. Marvel at the ‘Hero’ mural commanding over the streets, reflect at Martin Luther King Jr’s birthplace and tomb, and stand at the site of the 1906 Race Riot.

This bicycle tour also takes you through the Oakland Cemetery, so named for the majestic oak and magnolia trees flourishing amongst the headstones, offering 48 acres of remarkable gardens, sculptures, and architecture. A day tour designed to elucidate, inspire, and inform.
