Soak up Stockholm’s most sensational sights
Cycle to the standout spots in the sensational Swedish capital on this all-encompassing guided bike tour which takes in the icons of Stockholm, including the City Hall, Riddarholmen Kyrka, the Royal Palace, Gamla Stan (Old Town), the Vasa, and Djurgården. This bicycle tour provides the ultimate balance of exquisite Swedish architecture, green urban oases, and iconic cultural spots, ensuring you leave Stockholm with an admirable understanding of this incredible city’s identity.
Cycling first to Stockholm’s City Hall, capture a spectacular photograph of this National Romantic masterpiece, sublimely situated on the tip of the Kungsholmen island where it stands as a commanding presence over the tranquil waters. Inside this exquisite example of Romanesque Revival architecture lie conference rooms, offices, and grand ceremonial halls, including that which is used to host the esteemed Nobel Prize banquet.
Ride on to the Riddarholmen Kyrka, or the Riddarholmen Church. Situated close-by to the Royal Palace, the Riddarholmen Kyrka has served as the final resting place for Swedish monarchs for centuries. The church is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm with parts of the building dating back to the late thirteenth century, and its cast-iron spire, built to replace the original which was struck by lightning in 1835, forms one of the iconic highlights of the Stockholm skyline.
Your bicycle tour rides onwards to the resplendent Royal Palace, also known as the Stockholm Palace. Completed in 1760, this Baroque masterpiece is a stand-out highlight in any visitor’s itinerary, offering an incredible glimpse of the exquisite architectural beauty favored by the Swedish monarchy. Designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and built on the site of Tre Kronor Castle (destroyed by fire in 1697), the palace was eventually completed by architect Carl Hårleman after Tessin’s death, with Hårleman playing a large part in the design of the sublime Rococo interiors. These days, the palace draws around 800,000 admiring visitors every year.
The Royal Palace is situated in the famous Old Town region of Stockholm, known as Gamla Stan. Here, you’ll cycle past the typical Swedish-style buildings dating from the 1600s and 1700s, although you can find buildings here which date back as far as the thirteenth century. The iconic mustard-colored houses, labyrinthe cobblestone streets, and atmospheric meeting squares make the Gamla Stan an unmissable and unmistakably Swedish highlight of your Stockholm bike tour.
Making your way to the Vasa, discover Stockholm’s maritime museum on the beautiful island of Djurgården, named after the only 17th-century ship to have been salvaged almost fully intact - the Vasa - that sank in 1628 on her maiden voyage.
Beyond the museum, discover the enchanting island of Djurgården itself, beautifully situated in the center of Stockholm and famous not only for the Vasa but for the Skansen open-air museum, the ABBA Museum, and its gorgeous streets lined by eclectic shops. It’s a charming and culturally rich final destination on your sensational Stockholm bicycle tour.
