Let the river lead your ride
Take an e-bike tour along the Tagus and drink in the sublime vistas all along its burgeoning banks! This glorious guided day tour takes in the Cais das Colunas, the docks, the 25th of April Bridge, Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and the Monument to the Discoveries. Let the river lead your ride and be astonished by the treasures that lie along the Tagus!
It is here in Lisbon that the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula meets the Atlantic, and the glistening blue waters have inspired many a Fado, one popular song musing “My hair getting white, the Tagus is always young”. With your guide on-hand to teach you all about the significance of Lisbon’s beautiful river, you’ll feel the waters gifting you some of their rejuvenating properties.
Your electric bike tour begins by taking in the Cais das Colunas, offering exceptional quayside architecture and magnificent sunset views during Lisbon’s golden hours. Park up your e-bike at the mesmerizing marble steps, once the noble entrance to Lisbon, before following your guide to the docks. Here, you can watch the sunlight glinting off the yachts’ white flanks as they move serenely around their moorings. Be sure to ask your guide for recommendations of places to eat and drink - Lisbon’s docks are one of the city’s most celebrated areas to enjoy a glamorous evening meal.
Within Lisbon’s dock area you’ll be able to bike under the 25th of April Bridge, or Ponte 25 de Abril, a resplendent red suspension bridge spanning the River Tagus. Totaling 1.4 miles in length, the Ponte 25 de Abril has remained Europe’s longest suspension bridge since it was opened in 1966, and is often compared favorably to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. With a slightly more scarlet hue than San Francisco’s prized symbol, the 25th of April Bridge is one of the most impressive feats of architecture in Portugal.
Follow the river onwards to the Jerónimos Monastery, a colossal example of structural opulence in the city. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery, first opened in 1495, is a picture-perfect example of Portuguese Gothic Manueline architecture, and an unmissable sightseeing spot. Once viewed, its exquisite exterior can’t easily be misremembered.
Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the breathtaking Belém Tower, built in the Manueline style. Officially known as the Tower of Saint Vincent, Belém Tower dates back to the 16th century and was the point of embarkation and disembarkation for many Portuguese explorers, as well as the ceremonial entrance point to Lisbon.
Your engaging and leisurely e-bike tour reaches a fascinating finale at the Monument to the Discoveries, proudly standing on the Tagus riverside as a symbol of the Portuguese ‘Age of Exploration’ in the 15th and 16th centuries. This monument of modern classicism is perfectly positioned where Portuguese ships departed for India and the Orient, all those centuries ago.
To make your tour a little tastier, your guide may be able to offer you an authentic custard tart! Although a relatively new feature in the Lisbon legacy, pasteis de nata, Portugal’s tantalizing egg custard tarts, are already known around the world for their mouthwatering flaky casing and sweet, milky centers.
