    Venice to Florence

     Tour Description Daily Program

  • Daily program

Day 1: Individual arrival at Venice/Mestre/Marghera
The hotel on the mainland is within easy reach of Venice through excellent bus connections. At the beginning of your tour, not far from Marcus square, you can look forward to a little Grappa tasting session.
    Overnight in Venice/Mestre.

    Day 2: Marghera/Mestre/Venice – Chioggia/Sottomarina (22 miles/35 km)
In the morning, you will have your tour information. Then you will cycle on the bike path over the Liberty Bridge to Venice. Afterward, you will take the ferry to Lido and then you will cycle via Pellestrina, with stunning views of the sea, to Chioggia, a quiet little town reminiscent of the Venetian naval supremacy, where you can take a rest in one of the typical fish restaurants. Tonight, you will stay in Chioggia/Sottomarina, where there is a wide sandy beach.
    Overnight in Chioggia/Sottomarina.

    Day 3: Chioggia/Sottomarina – Adria (31 miles/50 km)
On quiet roads, you cycle today to the Adige River passing through fertile fields, melon plantations, and solitary villages to Adria, a small, friendly city with lots of charm. Founded by the Etruscans because of its proximity to the rivers Adige and Po, now especially the branched channels, narrow streets, cozy cafes, and friendly people attract visitors.
    Overnight in Adria.

    Day 4: Adria – Comacchio/surroundings (40 miles/65 km)
You will cycle a short part of today's route along the longest river in Italy, the river Po. Then, one of its branches, called Po di Goro, will lead you right through its delta towards the sea. Perhaps you want to cool off in the Adriatic Sea before you get to the charming town of Comacchio. Magnificent palazzi, ornate churches, and numerous bridges still bear witness of the prosperity once gained by salt production.
    Overnight in Comacchio/surroundings.

    Day 5: Comacchio/surroundings – Ravenna (40 miles/65 km)
The first half of the day’s bike tour is dedicated to the natural park "Delta del Po" with its unique flora and fauna. Riding your bike on a dam, you will feel like cycling straight through the water while flamingos are nesting only a few meters away from you. After two short ferry rides (tickets not included in the tour price, about €2) you will reach the Adriatic Sea. There are wide beaches on the way to Ravenna, where you will be enchanted by the art and culture of the port city.
    Overnight in Ravenna.

    Day 6: Ravenna – Brisighella (34 miles/55 km)
The foothills of the Apennines form gently rolling hills which change the landscape. Even earlier, on the edge of the vast plains, you will get to Faenza – an enchanting little city where world-famous ceramics are produced. The artists will be happy to let you watch while they are painting the artifacts.

Now it is not far to Brisighella anymore – an idyllic, medieval village, overlooked by the Rocca Veneziana and the Torre Orologgio. Tranquillity and pure relaxation are waiting for the cyclists.
    Overnight in Brisighella.

    Day 7: Brisighella – Florence (22 miles/35 km + train journey)
The day starts with an amazing train ride through the wild mountains of Apennines to Borgo San Lorenzo. Following two climbs, you cycle down a rushing descent via Fiesole to Florence, the historic capital of Tuscany. Take time to tour Florence in the evening.
    Overnight in Florence.

Day 8: Individual departure or extra days
This tour can be combined ideally with the tours Bolzano – Venice, Florence – Rome or Tuscany tour.

    Surface and terrain

This tour is primarily on flat terrain until the fifth day. On the sixth day, there are three to four hills that can be easily handled. On the seventh day, there are two small climbs followed by a long descent. The route follows dams, rural roads, and side roads with little traffic, the majority of which will have a paved surface. There are only very short distances that will be on roads with more traffic.

      An excellent ride; well planned!

One piece of advice: Insect Repellent! The stretch through the Po River delta was thick with mosquitos.
The route, logistics and equipment were all great. The hotels varied a bit, but were all at least adequate, and some were quite interesting and/or in interesting locations.
While most of the route is on quiet roads or paths, there are short segments that have quite heavy traffic. So being comfortable riding along fast-moving traffic is, I think, important.
Overall a very nice trip, and I will book again with BikeTours.com.

      Disappointing

We'd done the Mosel bike tour last year and it was picturesque, beautiful small towns, places to stop. This year we booked this trip to Italy to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary. On the plus side, Marco from Eurobike was extremely helpful. Good advice and help with bikes. Always on call by phone. The first stop to Chiaggo was beautiful. They left champagne in our room for our anniversary. Really sweet.
But after that the ride was super boring. Long stretch of riding alongside cow pastures or crossing busy roadways. No where to grab a bite to eat. Kind of like riding through the flatlands of Texas. We finally ditched the tour after 4 days and had them pick up our bikes instead of our luggage and went off and did our own thing. Again bike company was great and helpful, it just isn't a good bike trip.

      Good trip

An interesting trip from and to two iconic destinations stopping at several interesting cities along the way. Tour is very well organized and the hotels were all good to excellent. The route except for the last day is flat and mostly low traffic except near cities. In and out of cities can be high traffic and you need to be quite careful

      History seen

The accommodations were satisfactory to good (hotel in Choggia was wonderful). The trip was as expected and explained in the brochure. For the most part the directions and markers were decent except in Florence. Little to no markers seen and the directions to the parking garage given were incorrect for Florence, frustrating.
