  • Daily program

Day 1: Individual arrival to Trier
Trier is regarded as the oldest city of Germany. Numerous Roman monuments are present. Your rental bikes are already stored in the hotel.

    Day 2: Trier – Mülheim (37 miles/60 km)
Before you start along the Mosel you should schedule some time to visit the well-known amphitheater as well as the Porta Nigra. An educational trail along your route reports on domestic grape variety. Close to Piesport you will pass Neumagen-Dhron which is Germany's oldest wine village. Taste a glass of wine in Piesport - for sure this could be a nice finish of this beautiful cycle day!
    Overnight in Mülheim

    Day 3: Mülheim – Traben-Trarbach (19 miles/30 km)
Soon you will reach Bernkastel-Kues where many alleys and colorful half-timbered houses will impress. In any case, you should taste the well-known "Bernkastler Doctor" (locally produced wine). Further along the way you will pass the wine growing district named "Kröver Nacktarsch." A boat ride might offer beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards (cost not included in tour price). You have reached your day's destination with Traben-Trarbach. The city offers many architectural masterpieces of art nouveau and Belle Epoch.
    Overnight in Traben-Trarbach

    Day 4: Traben-Trarbach – Cochem/ Treis-Karden (34-40 miles/55-65 km)*
Today more vineyards will escort your way. Enkirch is a trinket of half-timbered houses and ideally suitable for a break. Always following the river Mosel you will pass another famous wine growing district which is called "Zeller Schwarze Katz." Cycling over Beilstein, widely known as "Rothenburg on the Mosel River," you will soon roll into Cochem. The charming center and the castle from the 11th century are just some highlights. Take enough time for a visit.
    Overnight in Cochem/Treis-Karden

    *mileage depends on overnight location

    Day 5: Cochem/Treis-Karden – Koblenz (34-25 miles/50-40 km)*
After a short distance you should make a side trip to the medieval castle "Burg Eltz," which counts among the most beautiful and best-preserved castles of Germany. Located in the heart of nature it offers magnificent views. Back to the Mosel bike path you pass numerous charming wine villages before you reach your final destination: Koblenz. The center is situated at the confluence of the Mosel River and the Rhine River and is extremely well-suited for a stroll.
    Overnight in Koblenz

*mileage depends on overnight location on Day 4

    Day 6: Koblenz – St. Goar (boat) – Koblenz (25 miles/40 km)
After breakfast you start with a boat ride along the river Rhine as far as St. Goar (ticket included in tour cost). You should take some time and visit the mystic "Loreley." Passing Boppard and Lahnstein the Rhine bike path escorts you back to Koblenz.
    Overnight in Koblenz

Day 7: Individual departure, transfer back to Trier or extension
In Koblenz, there is much to discover. If you are interested, we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you. Our transfer from Koblenz to Trier is very comfortable (not included in tour cost; possible daily with departure at 9:00am directly from the hotel, reservation required at time of booking).

    Surface and terrain

The Mosel bike path mostly runs on paved roads and bike trails and is well signposted. There are only a few short sections with more traffic.

Altogether this is a very easy bike tour and doesn't require more than basic fitness. This tour is ideally suited for families with children.

95 % of the route run on a separate bike path. Only around 5 % will be on a street with shared traffic, but with a bike lane.

      A bike trip to remember.

The bike trip was the highlight of our two week trip to Germany this year. We went from town to town with beautiful scenery along the way. We moved at our own pace and enjoyed stopping in towns along the way to our next destination. Our luggage was always at the next hotel, usually before we arrived. All hotels were beautiful. Having breakfast each morning was a great way to start each day. We were fortunate to have great weather, but the saddlebags did allow for bringing extra clothing or rain gear if needed. Equipment was in great shape as well. We used e-bikes which helped with hills when needed. If you want to see Germany through the eyes of small towns, at your own pace and without the hustle of large cities. This type a bike trip is recommended.

      Good trip

I will give you the positives and then areas I think you could improve upon. 1. The route along the Mosel is absolutely fantastic. And the boat ride down the Rhine was a very pleasant surprise. 2. We stayed in the upscaled lodging, and they were all very, very good. 3. The bikes were some of the best we have rented in Europe. They were very clean and I think almost new. Areas for improvement, 1. Your representative in Germany is, at best, average. Almost no discussion about the route or functionality of the bikes. He was very anxious to get the bikes in our hands...and leave. He also stated the route is so straightforward I did not need gps, and recommended I leave it a home. That might be true if I lived there and spoke the language. Regardless, I took my garmin and was very happy I did. The written directions were extremely imprecise - and since we had upgraded our lodging, our hotels had very bad directions to get to them. I even asked about this before we left and there was little effort to make them more clear. Not sure what your quality control is for your representatives, but we have been on several biketours.com and the quality of service when you get there is very, very inconsistent. Belgium was good, France not so much. 2. I would build in more time to see some of the beautiful small towns we visited along the way - at least give that as an option for people looking for a more relaxed schedule.

We had no guide but 4 of us, we enjoyed doing it on our own with all hotel booked and ready for cyclists. The maps and instructions are a good idea but need to be updated we got lost and spent a lot of time trying to figure out where we were and how to stay off roads to get there. Hill in Cochem to hotel was not pleasant. Needed better instruction on getting there and to garage

      Scenic and easy

Well organized tour, bikes ready and in great shape. The maps provided were a little out of date and twice the written instructions were wrong. At one point our hotel was a the top of a steep hill and the instructions led us to a staircase we felt unable to lug electric bikes up. Might not be a hotel used regularly. Otherwise, scenery was amazing, very little in road cycling although because of the terrain a lot of it was close to a road. The wine tasting was particularly interesting.

      The trip was well planned

The trip was wonderful unfortunately a member of our trip was injured and we had to stop our trip early. However the portion that we were able to do was wonderful, the hotels was great with a wonderful and very helpful staff. My only wish is that I would really like to have the GPS option, following the path was not difficult but would have been easier with the GPS, and made the trip more enjoyable.

      Fantastic bike trip through Germany

Our group of 3 all loved this trip. It's beautiful, a good balance of riding and interesting activities (like a wine tasting one evening). The hotels were all very good - ranging from extremely nice to more modest. The scenery and towns were terrific. Of course the food, beer and wine were all terrific. Highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a bike trip. Super easy to navigate and the bikes were top notch. (from 3 sort of picky New Yorkers!!)

      Self Guided Mosel River

Wes and the team at BikeTours.com were amazing helpful in planning our self guided trip. We were so lucky too that the weather was pleasant every day of our bike tour. This made the well planned tour even more special! We only experienced one late afternoon of rain in Sept..I would definitely contact Wes if we plan another bike tour in Europe, as he was attentive and friendly throughout our months ahead of planning.

The Mosel is a lovely ,calm river with various birds and river boats, plus vineyards up the hillsides on both sides to admire. The beginning of the tour is more peaceful than the latter part as the highways and roads follow the river and bike paths too and are closer in those parts. The towns in the middle of the tour are smaller and very interesting, and often we wished we had more time to explore them as some are historic and scenic. Faster riders and those with Ebikes may have had more time to visit these villages. The hotels especially Richtershof in Mulheim and Romantik Jugenstillhotel in Traben were places I would have loved to stay longer! .All hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The managers/staff at Hotel Schwarzen Baren in Koblenz were most personable, but please know if lodged there you have a longer distance to the hotel from the bike path and to the river boat and return the next day.

I would recommend that the first day not be the longest distance to bike for this tour. You are getting familiar with the heavier bikes, unlike ones you may own at home, taking multitudes of photo stops, and the hotel, restaurants, and area in Mulheim are a treat to behold after Trier. Getting there late afternoon left us less exploration and relaxation time. Otherwise the mileage per day was adequate for us. Do plan to have time to explore historic part of Cochem. It is a tourist stop and the Hotel Kebler Meyer is not in this part of town. My husband had an Ebike, I did not. Of course this review is personal, and I do prefer smaller villages to cities. Overall, we were most pleased with the tour arranged by BikeTours.com.

      Vineyards, vineyards, vineyards!!

Great tour for independent traveler. Well marked, easy riding, great maps and assistance if needed. First day was a bit long at 40 miles. Would have liked to have done tour in 5-6 days, to take in more sights and relax a bit more. But we are not seasoned bicyclists, so took a bit longer to travel the route.

      Great time riding the Mosel!

This is a beautiful piece of German wine growing region. The path was well mark and there were plenty of towns and restaurants along the route. The hotels were exceptional and the included wine tasting was informative and fun. We were skeptical about staying on the other side of the Rhine in Koblenz but this was a lovely hotel and a great place to stay!

The scenery along the route was breathtaking and every town on the tour was welcoming.
Most of the riding was on a well maintained bike path (many taking us through wine vineyards) although we were diverted to the road (both in-town and along busy thoroughfares) a time or two but besides the rides through the towns the riding along the roads was along a designated area for bikes and the vehicular traffic was mindful of the cyclists. The accommodations were very comfortable and having prepaid for daily breakfast and dinner we didn't have to make any choices where to eat and all-in-all each of our meals were satisfactory at minimum. Although the pre-tour preparation for our self-guided bike tour was very detailed with BikeTours.com the execution (by the German based company) left something to be desired. The riding instructions/maps we were given were based on the standard route so they didn't take our particular stops into consideration; we therefore spent a good amount of time lost on our bikes. This was also because the general riding directions/instructions provided by the German tour company were not very detailed and again, did not provide specific details relative to our daily stops. The equipment provided by the German tour company was fair; the two women's bikes were like beach cruisers so easy to get on/off, the e-bike was fantastic (appeared to be brand new) and the other men's bike worked fine although it seemed a bit big for the rider and it was the smallest men's frame the local company had available. The handlebar box and panier for each bike was adequate for transporting our personal items.

We LOVED the area, just wish we had spent less time being lost and more time exploring the beautiful, friendly towns scattered along the Moselle.

      Wonderful Trip

Everything about the trip was perfect especially the accommodations and bike supplier who was very helpful. The only problem was the trip itinerary schedule did not match the actual hotel destinations which caused considerable confusion for the first day. Once that was realized the trip was perfect..

2019 Mosel Bike Path After Action Report

The best way to explore the beautiful Mosel River Valley from Trier to Koblenz, and then the Rhine from Koblenz to St. Goar. The bikes were in excellent shape and the in-country issue and briefing was perfect. The hotels were very good. For our late April early May trip the weather cooperated perfectly. The morning temperatures were cool but by mid-day we could enjoy lunch at a sidewalk at one of the many scenic small towns along the route. We booked 2 extra days in Trier with the tour company to allow us to explore the city before departure. We were very happy with the hotel they chose and the competitive price we paid for the extra nights.

Super tour through the best wine area in Germany!! A must tour!

The tour down the Mosel the end of September 2018 was superior and the stops along the way tasting the local wines was superb! I'd do it again, so much to see and so much wine to drink! the hotels chosen were very nice and worth the expense ... except for our hotel in Cochem, fair and clean but not as nice as the other hotels/rooms. I'd also shorten the first day a bit, we went 35 miles a bit too much for day one. September was a great month to bike, crisp morning and lovely afternoons. Rain only one day! Bikes were in great shape and the side bag provided for each bike were a necessity!

      Moselle River Memories

We had high expectations going into the five day ride along the Moselle, four on it and one day on the Rhein, and the trip far exceeded those expectations. The views were absolutely incredible, the wines and beer were easily accessible, and the people friendly and helpful. We were fed marvelous European breakfasts each morning in wonderful hotels, which sustained us throughout the day. We had the time of our lives.

      Lovely Vacation

The perfect way to truly experience a country. I have traveled all over Europe before, the big cities of course, but this trip showed me the other side, Small towns and its people. Biketours is a great company with very helpful and professional people on the ground and online!
I was a bit concerned about the journey, because I get lost a lot, but I did very well! Had a great time!!

      relaxing and enjoyable biking

This bike trip combines wonderful natural scenery --- kilometres of vineyards stretching up steep hills on both sides of the river, the meandering river with huge bends that continually open up to new vistas---with lovely, often quaint villages and towns. The biking is gentle and easy, mainly on an off road trail. And there's always an opportunity to stop for a coffee or glass of wine around the next bend.

      Surrounded by Vineyards

This was an easy ride along the Mosel River in the heart of the wine country. It was impressive to see the intense grape cultivation on the steep hillsides on both sides of the river as we cycled along, mostly on the flat. The scenery and small towns along the way were lovely even though, at times, you were between the road and or train tracks and the river.

Everyone should ride the Mosel Valley

This was our third trip down the Mosel. It almost seems to be created for cyclists. Lots of small towns, plenty of places to stop for breaks (coffee, beer, food, etc). Highly recommend this trip, only question is how many days since several options are available. We actually preferred (slightly) the 5-6 day trip over the longer one, but that's just personal. It's a no worry biking experience. We like that it is self guided and can set our own pace (relaxed). No worry about getting lost since both excellent maps are provided and signs posted at every turn.

The perfect introduction to bike trips

This trip is extremely doable and enjoyable. We felt gratified to be pushing ourselves just enough to feel like we had really exercised but not so much that we were too tired or didn't have enough time to explore our surroundings. Even despite the rain two of the five days, we had a blast. Trittenheim was our highlight (visit Josef Rosch!).

The hotel accommodations were great, and the luggage transfers and connections were seamless. The only challenge we experienced was finding the trailhead on the first day. Bike-tours might consider adding more specific details on how to reach the trailhead from the initial hotels.

There were also lots of typos and errors in the materials. It would be worthwhile to get a native English speaker to review and revise.

      Awesome revisit

Beautiful scenery and wonderful villages/stubes along the way to stop and relax and have a wonderful wine or beer. It's an easy ride and we chose to redo this bike tour as we remembered the scenery so well and the nice paths.

      Great group holiday

Perfect way to see a country and get some excercise at the same time however compared to other bike tours I have done we were disappointed that we were not met by local company at beginning of trip, the bikes didn't come with helmets or water bottle holders or a place on handlebars to put the maps

Thank you very much for your feedback. We encourage all clients to review "Included services" on the tour pages, so they have appropriate expectations for what is included. For this very low-cost tour (435 euros), no orientations are offered. Instead, the operator provides very detailed tour documenations. On the "Bike rentals" page, it's specifically stated, "Helmets are not available to rent. We recommend that you bring or buy your own helmet for safety and hygiene purposes." This is increasingly the case for most operators (I never wear a rental helmet, as it may not fit, may have an invisible crack (which renders it useless), and there's no amount of disinfectant that can eliminate previous users' sweat). It's also noted that map holders are available on request. Relative to bottle holders, many operators don't offer them, as they have proven dangerous for riders who aren't accustomed to reaching down while riding.

I apologize that our tour advisor staff did not make sure your expectations were appropriate for this tour, which routinely gets top ratings.

      Great experience

The best holiday we have ever had. The cycle route is very well sign posted and the tour operators superb.
Hotels are well situated and very well suited for our needs.
Our only request would have been for trip meters on each bicycle to keep track of the kilometers travelled each day

Beautiful Scenery, Nice Riding, and Excellent Wine

Excellent bike tour! Traveling as a couple, we found the hotels nice, and especially loved the Hotel Weinhaus Mayer in Zell. Our favorite stops on the trip include hiking up to Zummethöhe and having dinner at Hotel Zummethof after the first day of biking (Trittenheim); wine tasting at the Vino-thek in Bernkastel-Kues; and everything about our stay in Zell. Breakfasts were excellent, and kept us filled until the afternoon.
There were many other bike tourists on the route, including families with children of all ages. The route was fairly flat, and there seemed to be options for riding on either side of the river in most cases. The riding can be done in 2-4 hours, and there are plenty of villages to stop in along the way.
The bike path itself was generally wide and well-paved, although we experienced a few short bumpy segments. The first 10 or so miles of the bike path (leaving Trier) goes through a rather industrial area, but once you've gotten through that, the scenery on the rest of the tour is incredible. We did the tour in mid-July, and had generally great weather. If going in early August, you should be able to eat lots of wild blackberries! We had a great time and would highly recommend the tour to anyone looking for a scenic and relatively leisurely trip.

Laid-back riding in scenic German wine country

I went on this tour as a BikeTours.com staff member. It's long been a popular choice for our clients due to the leisurely riding and low price tag. It turned out to be the perfect combination for me of relaxed cycling, off-bike sites and diversions, and plenty of wine tastings.

The Mosel valley is known (along with the nearby Rhine valley) for producing Germany's beloved riesling wines. As a white wine lover myself, it was a little slice of heaven! There's no shortage of opportunities to stop in at wineries and tasting rooms to sample the local fare. Some even have stands right on the bike path to bring the tasty wares right to you! It was lovely to stop at these stands and enjoy a glass of the sweet wine while sitting on the riverbank and chatting with other cyclists.

If you hit bad weather or want to shorten a day's ride, there are good alternative transportation options in this region. An injury from a recent mountain bike crash made longer rides uncomfortable for me during this trip, so I took advantage of a ferry one day to roll my bike aboard and enjoy a little river cruise for several stops before deciding where I wanted to hop off and start riding again.

Another day I took a regional train to shave off a few miles. I bought a ticket for myself and one for my bike, then boarded the car clearly marked for bicycles and rode a few stops.

The dedicated bike path makes for care-free riding: well marked for directions and distances, no vehicles apart from an occasional slow-moving tractor (since you're often riding through farmland and vineyards), and paved almost the whole way. The path hugs both banks of the Mosel River, and your map book shows any unpaved sections so you can cross the river in advance if you don't want to ride on short segments of dirt or gravel.

I found the directions and maps to be reliable, but it's quite difficult to get lost anyway -- all you have to do is point your bike back toward the river and you'll eventually intersect the bike path!

I was very pleased with the accommodations, a mix of comfortable hotels in larger town centers and family-owned winery guesthouses in the smaller villages. All had hearty breakfasts to fuel a day of cycling and exploring.

I did this tour solo, as a female in her thirties, and felt safe and secure (of course taking reasonable precautions). I liked that it was in mostly rural areas, but never terribly remote. There was always a farmhouse nearby, and the bike path was traveled enough that I was passing someone at least every few miles. Having the emergency hotline is a good reassurance as well.

The locals seemed a bit amused by a young(ish) American woman riding the Mosel Bike Path by herself, mostly because the usual clientele is composed more of families, couples, and Europeans. But it was always a good conversation starter to make new friends!  SHOW MORE
