Let the awe-inspiring majesty of Lake Myvatn inspire you
Few who set eyes on the sensational, seemingly limitless waters of Lake Myvatn will ever forget it. It’s an awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping vista that intoxicates the eyes with its iridescent, tranquil beauty, stretching spectacularly towards the mountains. Lake Myvatn is Iceland’s fourth-largest body of water, measuring 36.5 square kilometers in area, and offers not only an unbelievably arresting aesthetic, but also magical geological features, and wonderful wildlife-spotting opportunities.
This guided bicycle tour of Lake Myvatn takes in the magnificent beauty of the Icelandic landscape, with views over the transfixing waters of the lake, as well as the geological phenomena of the area. You’ll cycle to some of the more unusual sightseeing spots, like the ‘Underground Bakery’, and finish up with a memorable swim in the Myvatn Nature Baths.
Bike to the ‘Underground Bakery’ for an intriguing insight into the phenomenon of geothermal steam baking. Here, locals bake geyser bread (also known as Rúgbrauð, or Icelandic rye bread) beneath the ground using geothermal steam - quite a different method from the typical kitchen!
Your captivating day tour continues to the old Steam Bath Cave, a wonderful ‘warm-up’ for your incredible visit to the Myvatn Nature Baths. Here, you’ll have approximately one hour set aside for slipping into the geothermal waters and basking in the benefits of the natural steam baths. Bring your swimwear and a towel along for the tour, or rent from the baths if you forget. It’s a unique, memorable experience to top off a fascinating trip around Lake Myvatn!
